Located in the southwestern part of the Pirin Mountain, the "Melnish pyramids" reach a height of about 100 meters in some places. According to scientists, about 4-5 million years ago, the area is supposed to have been the bottom of a huge shallow lake. To some extent, this also explains the rock-sand material on the cliffs. The pyramids also resemble a variety of whimsical figures from rock mushrooms to obelisks and Gothic church domes.
