Thank you for being with us!
A great many archaeological sites have been discovered on the territory of our country. Some of them are still under investigation. Among the civilizations and peoples that inhabited our lands, we have the greatest heritage such as sanctuaries, tombs and other objects bequeathed by the Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Greeks.
Be with us to visit the most interesting places!
# 1 Beglik tash
„Beglik tash“ is one of the largest Thracian megalithic sanctuaries in Bulgaria. It si located in a distance of about 5 km from the town of Primorsko. It is assumed that its name comes from the Turkish words "beglik" (tax in kind) and "tash" (stone). The sanctuary has been the subject of research by the Shkorpil brothers, prof, Alexander Fall and a number of other archaeologists. It is believed that the place has been active for nearly 20 centuries, starting as early as the 15th century BC.
From it you can visit the beautiful bays "Zigra" и "St. Paraskeva".
# 2 Ancient fortress on Cape "Saint Atanas" - town of Byala
The ancient fortress is located 3 km south of the town of Byala. It was discovered in 2009. It is associated with a Thracian civilization that inhabited our Black Sea coast. It was a sacred place of worship in the period of the 4th century BC. to the 3rd century AD. Over time, wine production, crafts, trade developed there, which turned it into a significant port and fortification for the region. From the 5th to the 6th century it was an early Christian bishopric that included a basilica, baptisteries, dwellings, a storehouse and a well for holy water. In 614, it was burned down and abandoned as a result of an Avar-Slavic invasion.
Do not forget that nearby you can also visit the natural phenomenon "White Rocks", about which there is an article on the page of our blog.
# 3 Megalith above the village of Buzovgrad
The "Megalith" is located near the village of Buzovgrad, Kazanlak municipality. It is believed to have been an ancient sanctuary built in the 18th - 16th century BC. It consists of rock formations with a hewn opening about 1.80 m high. A throne and an altar were found in the area of the sanctuary. It is assumed that it was intended to be used for cult rituals and burials, but according to scientists, in addition to a pilgrimage purpose, the megalith was a military observation post and a communication point.
Important: To reach the megalith, take the built eco-path. There are signposts in the center of the village. At an average pace, the distance is covered in about 1 hour.
# 4 "Mishkova field", town of Malko Tarnovo
"Mishkova field" is located near the border with Turkey in the area of the town of Malko Tarnovo. It is an archaeological complex, including a Thracian sanctuary, domed tombs, a fortress (on Gradishte – the highest peak in Strandzha in the country), ancient mines and a Roman villa. It is assumed that the complex was built between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC. Undoubtedly, the most attractive object to visit in the sanctuary is the dome tomb. At its entrance there was a large triangular fonton (exhibited in the museum in the town of Malko Tarnovo) with an image of a shield and a spear, and between them two human palms. The well-preserved stone blocks, floor and walls of the dome tomb make an impression. There is an observation deck right next to the sanctuary for better visibility and an overview of the area.
Important: Because "Mishkova field" is located in border territory, before visiting it you must register in "Border Police", which is located next to the town of Malko Tarnovo.
